What is Vishing?

Voice phishing โ€” scam phone calls trying to trick you into approving transactions or sharing OTPs.

Vishing = Voice + Phishing.

A person calls you pretending to be from your bank's fraud department, SITA, SARS, a retailer, or even your medical aid.

Classic script:

"Good day, I'm from Capitec Security. We see a R1,850 transaction at Builders Warehouse that we think is fraudulent. I'm sending a reversal to your app right now โ€” just press APPROVE so we can refund you."

THE TRUTH: Pressing approve does NOT refund. It SENDS MONEY TO THE SCAMMER.

Golden rules for phone calls:

1. Banks NEVER call you to ask you to press APPROVE on your app. 2. Banks NEVER ask for OTP codes, PINs, or card CVVs over the phone. 3. If someone calls claiming to be from a bank โ†’ HANG UP. Wait 5 minutes. Then call the number on the BACK OF YOUR PHYSICAL BANK CARD. 4. Never share a 6-digit code with ANYONE over the phone, even a "friend" or "family member".
